Our new, state-of-the-art CrossFit® Fitness Suite
We are excited with our new, state-of-the-art CrossFit® affiliated fitness suite, which was installed over the summer break. Developed in partnership with The Academy Programme and supported by CrossFit Fullmoon Liverpool, this new facility is part of our mission to revolutionise our PE curriculum and inspire a lifelong passion for health and fitness among our students.
The new CrossFit® affiliated fitness suite will play a key role in offering a more dynamic and inclusive approach to PE. Traditional lessons will now include CrossFit®-affiliated sessions that focus on building strength, agility, and endurance. These sessions aim to make fitness accessible and engaging for all, while encouraging our students to develop confidence, resilience, and a lasting commitment to their wellbeing.
Jon Solan, our Head of PE and Health, shared his excitement about the change: "We’re thrilled to bring this new CrossFit® affiliated fitness suite to our students. It’s a space where they can grow, build confidence, and develop a lifelong passion for fitness. By integrating functional fitness into both our curriculum and extracurricular activities, we’re ensuring every student, especially those who may not have enjoyed traditional sports, has the opportunity to thrive physically and mentally.”
This initiative is part of our broader commitment to supporting all our students' development, both in and out of the classroom. We’ve partnered with The Academy Programme, led by founder Hannah Mittoo, to equip our students with valuable life skills through weightlifting and functional fitness. Hannah’s experience with the life-changing impact of CrossFit fuels her dedication to helping young people reach their full potential. She believes that “every young person deserves the chance to realise their full potential, and this programme goes beyond traditional education to help students lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
In addition to our daily curriculum lessons, we will be aiming to offer CrossFit® affiliated sessions as an extracurricular activity for students, in the future. This initiative is supported by Reece Mitchell, a decorated CrossFit Games athlete who has overcome challenges like autism and ADHD to achieve global success. Reece will work closely with our PE staff to deliver training and design the extracurricular programme. He is passionate about sharing the transformative power of CrossFit, saying, "CrossFit has completely changed my life, and I’m excited to share that journey with the students at Alsop. This is about more than just fitness; it’s about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of community."
We are also proud to become the first school to partner with the national governing body of British Weightlifting. Our staff will receive British Weightlifting Level 2 qualifications in Functional Fitness and Olympic Weightlifting, ensuring we provide the highest quality instruction to our students. British Weightlifting’s Sports Development Manager, Hannah Bussey, commended our efforts: "Alsop is setting a new standard in physical education. By incorporating weightlifting and functional fitness into the curriculum, the school is not only enhancing PE lessons but also empowering students with the skills and confidence to lead healthier lives."
This initiative is part of a wider investment in our sports facilities, with over £150k invested from the Omega Multi-Academy Trust. The investment includes a new Multi-Use Games Area for football, rugby, and hockey, and future plans include a refurbished dance studio, and a new activities suite with six table tennis tables.
The space has also been brought to life with vibrant murals by local artist Joseph Venning, whose work is featured in iconic venues like Liverpool’s Liver Building. Venning’s artwork has created an urban gym atmosphere that our students love.
With these exciting new developments, we are shaping the future of physical education at Alsop and supporting the personal growth, health, and wellbeing of every student.
